10 Essential Tips for Trekking Annapurna

The Annapurna Circuit is one of the great treks in the Himalayas. It takes between 12-18 days and traverses through subtropical fields, alpine forests and high dessert to reach the Thorong La Pass (5416m). Make sure you get your ACAP permit sorted well in advance (NPR3000 for foreigners) from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Check with an authorised agency for up-to-date TIMS, guide regulations etc. Go in Spring or Autumn for good weather conditions and clear views. Plan a flexible itinerary with some extra days built in. Acclimatise properly by spending 2 nights in Manang and descend if showing symptoms of altitude sickness. Pack light with layers, -10 degree sleeping bag and well broken in boots (or hire a porter). Budget $1200-$1800 for a standard guided tour. Take cash. Consider hiring an authorised guide and insured porter. Get travel insurance to cover trekking to 5500m height and helicopter rescue. Be respectful of the environment and culture by taking your rubbish out, purifying your water and saying Namaste to locals.
